We work where the drawings stopped being accurate in 1987. Sublevels, pneumatic lines, mechanical rooms nobody has opened since the last owner. If your building hums, ticks or breathes at night, we have probably been inside it.

Cross Thermal Systems service agreements signed before 2027 remain valid and transfer to Cross HVAC & Sons.

If your building still has a Cross control panel with a blue nameplate, do not let another contractor open it. Call us first. Seriously.

We measure static pressure in inches of water column, not opinions. Fourth floor too warm and the fifth too cold is usually one stuck damper and three years of workarounds.

Belts, bearings, coils, economizers. Rooftop units that have been patched by four contractors and cursed by all of them.

Terminal units

Rebalancing, actuator swaps, bleed faults. If a box keeps bleeding on a closed signal, we find out why before we replace anything.

Our story

Joseph Cross started as a field technician on Buffalo's East Side and ended up designing the cooling loops that kept a generation of American data centers from cooking‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ themselves. The trade press called him the man who kept AI cold. Engineers still call a certain closed-loop layout a Cross loop.

Cross Thermal Systems grew out of this building on Walden Avenue into a national contractor. Then it didn't. Contracts ended, lawyers arrived, and the company was sold off in pieces to buyers nobody had heard of. Joseph kept the Buffalo shop and the old service agreements, and kept working until he couldn't.

He died in 2027. His son Ayden runs the shop now. Ayden will tell you he is a repairman, not an engineer. He is being modest about one of those.

Requirements

Qualified in commercial refrigeration. EPA 608 Universal.
Unafraid of confined spaces, sublevels and old pneumatic tube chases.
Is comfortable working 23:00 to 07:00, and awake at 03:47 if the phone rings.
Experience with VAV boxes and pneumatic controls, especially old Johnson stock.
Tolerant of noise. Some sites hum. Do not report the hum to the building manager.
Reliable transportation within Erie County.
Owns hand tools. The company supplies the meters.
Okay with writing down readings that don't make sense.
Must not discuss site conditions with anyone outside the crew.
